Unions appeal to PM to bailout railways

New Delhi, Feb 14 (IANS) Drawing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's attention to the "miserable condition of the railways", the 1.2 million member-strong All India Railwaymen's Federation has appealed for a Rs.50,000 crore package to pull the national transporter out of its deep financial crisis.

A copy of the letter written by AIRF general secretary Shiv Gopal Mishra, dated Feb 11, was released to media Tuesday.

"We want to draw your attention to the miserable condition of the railways. The government should give a package worth Rs.50,000 crore and dispense with the dividend it pays to the centre to bail it out," said Mishra in his letter to the prime minister.

Stating that the railways were in deep financial crisis, he said they need government help like the national highways, ports and power houses.

Due to poor financial management over the past few years and no hike in passenger fares for the past decade, the railways have an earnings shortfall of Rs.7,000 crore a month before the railway budget for 2012-13 is presented March 14.

With all its earnings going into running the network, there is nothing left for replacement and renewal of existing assets or to take up any development projects.

Interestingly, both the finance ministry and the planning commission have been asking the railways to revise passenger fares to generate its own resources. Both have refused its bailout appeals earlier.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has not allowed Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi to hike passenger fares fearing the move might be seen as anti-poor.

Kingfisher, Jet Airways and Now Indian Railways. Private or Public everyone needs money from government.
Have you companies ever thought to care your customer who are same tax paying citizens of India, whose collected tax money would be used by government to support you all in Financial crisis.

King Fisher M.D. Takes away huge amount as salary. May be the case with Railways as the top boss' salary may be in millions. Govt.bail out package means ordinary citizens need to pay for these expenses. Fare must be increased in proportion to the normal running expenditures. Vote bank politics may lead the entire country into bankruptcy.

Indian Railways carry almost 90% passengers in II class. The Railway Ministers have been boasting that they have not increased fares for this class for the last 8 years. On the other hand fares of A.C. class have been increased 3 times at least during the 8 year period. By keeping fare of II class too low you find lot of crowds in the trains because these people find easy money to afford their travel to their homes with family almost every 3 months. Why not recover only the costs from II class travellers instead of subsidising II class. Then the losses will stop. Also the freight charges have been increasing regularly. The Railway Ministry should run Railways as a profit centre and not as a service centre. If you don't make profit how do you finance replacement and growth.

The running staff in reserved compartments have to be honest because this is the place where leakage of funds takes place. The money instead of going to Railways goes to unauthorised pockets.

The other area of complete overhaul is thefts of cargo. Let Railway employees be honest guardians of goods booked by individuals and businessmen.

Yes ,, Railway should raise a little bit price in passenger tickets ... Like for local tickets it can raise 1 rupee .. and this will create money source to meet the financial crisis .. the decision can be anti-poor but even after just increasing a mare amount of rs 1 can generate huge revenue to railway ... and also even after increasing fare .. railway is the cheapest transport in country ..
