Sheila to approach power ministry over grid overdraw

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit will seek the central government's intervention to ensure that neighbouring states comply with grid discipline and don't overdraw power from the national grid.

"The chief minster will be writing to the Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, requesting his intervention to ensure strict compliance of grid discipline by the states," said a government official.

According to the official, all states except Delhi have been overdrawing from the national grid.

In a high-level meeting Wednesday, Dikshit reviewed the power availability and distribution with power distribution companies, which assured her that arrangements have been made to meet the power demand up to 5300 Mega Watt (MW).

It was discussed that disruptions in power supply are arising due to non-compliance of grid discipline by neighbouring States.

The power demand in east and central Delhi Wednesday reached an all time high of 1,243 MW surpassing the previous record of 1237 MW in May whereas the power demand in east and central Delhi Wednesday reached all time high of 1243 MW, surpassing the previous record of 1237 MW in May.

"Since adequate power to meet the demand has been ensured, the chief minister told the power distribution companies that local outages will not be tolerated," said an official.

While the power distribution companies (Discoms) were instructed to submit daily reports on power supply and outages to the government's power department, the Principal Secretary (Power) has been instructed to closely monitor the situation.

It was also decided that the Discoms would provide alternative power lines to water treatment plants to ensure uninterrupted power supply and the Delhi Jal Board has been asked to meet the expenditure in this regard.

The meeting chaired by Dikshit was attended by Chief Secretary P.K. Tripathi, Principal Secretary (Power) Shakti Sinha, Chief Executive Officer, Delhi Jal Board and CEOs of all the three Discoms.
