No customs, VAT on non-subsidised cooking gas: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS) Finance Minister P. Chidambaram Friday said the government would remove customs, excise duty and value-added tax (VAT) from the sale of non-subsidised cooking gas.

Talking to reporters here, Chidambaram said duties on the sale of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders for domestic use will be brought down to zero level in a bid to give relief to common people.

The government last week announced that it would limit the number of subsidised LPG cylinders to a family to six in a year.

With a view to cut subsidies on petroleum products, the government has also announced 12 percent increase in diesel prices.

Chidambaram welcomed Bihar government's decision to cut value-added tax on diesel.

The finance minister urged other state government's to cut taxes on LPG and diesel, to give relief to common people.
