Work culture has vastly improved in Bengal: Mamata

Kolkata, July 26 (IANS) Claiming that her Trinamool Congress-led government has fulfilled 99 percent of the promises made in its election manifesto, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday asserted that work culture has also improved in the state.

"In 14 months we have fulfilled 99 percent of the promises we made in our manifesto. The work culture has changed in the state. I am happy," Banerjee said here.

Attacking the erstwhile Left front government for the decaying work culture in the state, the chief minister said she had reached to the grassroots and led from the front.

"In 2010-11 alone the state lost 66,00,000 mandays because of shutdowns and strikes. But after we came to power, only 66,000 mandays were lost in 2011-12," she said at a government function where she inaugurated two flagship programmes - setting up a web-based employment bank and a social security card meant for unorganised sector workers.

The Trinamool government has ensured six lakh additional jobs in the past one year, she said and exuded confidence that the regime would surpass its target of providing ten lakh jobs in five years.

Banerjee asked the state labour department to reduce the gulf between the unorganised labour force and those enjoying the benefits of government schemes.

"There are around 27 lakh unorganised workers registered in the State. But only 47,000 can avail of the benefits of the state government schemes," she added.
